Join the Hike with a Naturalist spring series, led by Bennett Myhran, the City Forester for Wayzata, as you explore the Big Woods Preserve and Wood-Rill SNA with your family. These all-ages hikes offer a chance to learn about local wildlife, conservation challenges, and how humans connect with the natural world. Each class in this spring series will also include some appreciation for the mysterious science of budding trees and emerging greenery. **Parent participation required May 14: Welcome to the Big Woods (all ages) On this hike we’ll learn about the ins and outs of this unique woodland preserve. First-time visitors and lifelong enthusiasts are welcome! We’ll be stopping at a number of notable sites along the way to talk about trees, soils, wildlife, and how we humans fit into the equation. May 17: Get to Know Your Trees (all ages) If you live nearby, you probably spend most of your days surrounded by trees – but how well do you really know them? On this hike, we’ll talk about what makes these giants so impressive and what we can do to show them our appreciation. May 23: Conservation 101 (all ages) Woodrill SNA is home to an increasingly rare woodland ecosystem that once defined what is now the Twin Cities west metro area. On this hike, we’ll learn what makes an “old-growth” forest like this so special. Intro to Stand Up PaddleboardingFitnessOn and off the water, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) training that will have you comfortably paddling in no time! Learn the basics of SUP, including equipment overview, paddle, launch techniques, and general safety instruction. 45 minutes of instruction followed by 45 minute rental. Due to safety concerns, classes and rentals at Wayzata Beach are for individuals age 12+ only (age 12-15 must be accompanied on the water by a registered parent or adult guardian). Sorry, no riders. Renters under age 18 must have a parent or legal guardian’s signature on the required waiver form. Intro to Trout Fishing - Live on the StreamSpecial InterestThis five-hour, live fly fishing class on a trout stream begins with a one-hour introduction covering gear, flies, rigging, and knots. You will then receive fly-casting lessons on both dry ground and in the river. Finally, you will put on waders and boots to fish for trout under the watchful eye of your guide and instructor, Scott Harness. All equipment is supplied. This class will take place at either Kinnickinnic or Rush River in Wisconsin, which are about 1-1.5 hours away from the Twin Cities. More details will be sent to registered participants closer to the start date. *A 1-day Wisconsin fishing license and trout stamp will need to be purchased prior to class for approximately $25.
