Bicycle Repair and RebuildingSpecial InterestsStudents in this class will learn all aspects of repairing and rebuilding bikes including gears, brakes, wheel truing and re-greasing. Demonstrations will be done on bikes supplied by the instructor. Basic physics will be explained in the demonstration, including simple machines, gears, levers, and mechanical advantage. Students will work on bikes donated by local police departments and be able to keep the bikes and bring them home after class! The instructor will provide all tools and cleaning materials. Some spare parts will be available for student use. If students wish to buy parts for their bikes, parents can purchase parts on their own or from the instructor at wholesale prices. Bike Trailside and Home Repair/MaintenanceSpecial InterestThis 3-hour class will build from the basics to more advanced. Many of your bike issues can be solved in this class! Major focus will be on identification of bicycle parts, trailside repair, shifting adjustments, brake adjustments, chain maintenance, how to repair/replace a tube (flat tire), how to safety check your bike. If time allows, we will also learn basic wheel truing, replacing a chain, how to replace brake and shifting cables. Please bring a bike. Especially one that need work! Biologist Explorer CampSTEMJoin a Naturalist from EcoElsa to learn how to conduct different animal surveys and experiments. Kids will learn how to observe different animals and collect data about them and their habitats as well as how to report that data as a “citizen scientist.” Camp will include getting to interact with a wide variety of plants and small wildlife like insects, amphibians, snakes, and birds as well as using different scientist tools to do their research and exploring. Birchview Jumpstart to KGeneral Misc.Jumpstart to K is an engaging introduction to your Rising Kindergartner's future elementary school. This brief yet impactful experience aims to familiarize children with the school to help a smooth transition into kindergarten. Birchview teachers lead Jumpstart to K, and while the teacher your Rising K student meets for this program may not be their classroom teacher for Kindergarten, they will be another familiar, friendly face during the transition. This program is designed to be interactive and fun. Throughout the morning or afternoon, your Rising K student will engage in a series of interactive activities and guided experiences aimed at building confidence and enthusiasm for the kindergarten classroom. From a brief introduction to school rules and routines to navigating common areas such as the classroom, cafeteria, and playground, students will gain an understanding of what to expect in their new school environment. Jumpstart to K allows children another opportunity in their future school in a supportive and nurturing environment for this exciting milestone. Please note that Jumpstart to K is a drop-off program.
